Introducing a player to the “next level” part 2. Scourge

The next level for a beginner is usually a 1000 point army after a starter set. While I demo games at starter level I do believe that DZC works best with a little more units. A 1000point battle is fast, fun, challenging and entertaining. But against a beginner it can be quite one sided. So I have come up with an idea of underdog and overdog armies. The more experienced player takes a underdog army that is slightly less effective in it’s build than the opponent’s. Thus a more experienced DZC player can find the game more fun and exciting while a newer player will most likely loose but will absolutely do harm and most likely it will not be a total massacre.

So the rules are that the following restrictions apply for a sensible 1000 point army:

  • 1000 points
  • Max 4 battlegroups.
  • Max CV level 3.
  • one underdog army and one overdog.
  • Playing a mixed mission like hold the flanks.
  • Overdog army should contain more units that are sensible for a new player to get hold of when they start to collect.

In reality DZC is pretty balanced and as such without a huge and obvious restriction in specific units it will be pretty hard to make an armylist an automatic win for the Noob. So most likely the more experienced player will win still. But my idea is to have army lists making sure the newer player always feel they are in the game. I am kind of expecting the more experienced player to keep the newer player away from game breaking mistakes. Like loosing infantry in turn 2.

So on to the next army; Scourge

The Overdog

Standard Army Standard Roster [996/1000 pts]

Overseer: Overseer(Master) [275 pts]

Hunter Squad: 3x Hunter, Marauder(+Vampire) [154 pts]
Reaper Squad: 3x Reaper, Marauder [158 pts]

Warrior Horde: 2x Warriors, Intruder Alpha [94 pts]
Warrior Horde: 2x Warriors, Intruder Alpha [94 pts]
Corruptors: Corruptor [80 pts]

Slayer Squad: 2x Slayer, Marauder [141 pts]

Now with this army you pack some punch. The downside is that the player need to keep track of the Corruptor. But at the same time it is a great shooty army. The Overseer will most likely not die and as I assume you play a mission like hold the flanks the Overseer guarantee a focal point while the rest of the army can hunt well…anything. The downside is objective hunting but with a infantry squad and a worm you will find your objective and then it is a matter of getting into the center building.

The Underdog

Standard Army Standard Roster [993/1000 pts]

Oppressor: Oppressor(Champion), Harbinger [250 pts]
Minders: 4x Minder, Intruder Beta [56 pts]

Stalkers: 3x Stalker, Harbinger [136 pts]
Ravagers: 3x Ravager, Harbinger [175 pts]

Warrior Horde: 3x Warriors, Marauder, 2x Invader [156 pts]
^ Sharing ^ Aged Ones: 3x Aged Ones [126 pts]

Warrior Horde: 2x Warriors, Intruder Alpha [94 pts]

Now for this army the Scourge has to struggle with a CV level of 2, CQB infantry Aged ones that are in a medium transport and Stalkers. Much need to get first activation but just can’t get it. Now still it can attack. The Oppressor is pretty nasty at 1000points but compared to the army above it is very challenging. With medium dropships for infantry you want to shoot but in this army you will need to invest those points in finding objectives. Still the Aged ones do dish out a lot of die.


Again the underdog army isn’t bad per say. I can see it win games it is just an army that can be a little more challenging when you commander dies.
