Swedes in London: Jens’ AAR – Part 1 of 3

Two and a half week ago since Invasion. An incredible event with lots of fun, food and beer. As you already may have read we did quite well in Team Sweden. Personally it went really good and I improved both in position and most importantly in points. I intended to do a more detailed AAR but realised already during Invasion that I have trouble remembering the games. I blame the concentration and fun. Therefore this will most likely be short and hopefully I can remember some details about each game

This is the army I brought. Quite walker heavy.

I will not post my list here as I already have described it and compared it to my list from February here. I will start by doing a short recap of every game and then discuss mission selection and my overall impression of the tournament in the end.

Game 1 – Targets of Opportunity

PHR Steven Curr, placed: 39th with 45 pts. at Targets of Opportunity, win 13 – 7, KP 381/312 +59

I always enjoy playing variations of Target of Opportunity, it is usually the benchmark scenario by which I evaluate my lists. My first opponent was Steven Curr and his PHR. He placed 39th with a total of 45 points. This game is the one hardest for me to remember. I know that I won by two victory points, getting three objectives off the board while Steven got two off. Or at least that how I think it ended. My last objective I got off by doing Shaltari shenanigans succeeding to pull it back all the way from one of the middle line buildings in one turn. Unfortunately my opponent was not aware of this shenanigan and thus was a bit surprised and a small clarification of the rules were needed. It was all thanks to Gates ability to drop objectives. Thus it was a bit boring to win as my opponent did not expect it. In hindsight I do not think Steven could have stopped me in the last turn, but it could have played out different from turn 1.

I remember dodging both the Nemesis and Hades in order to not take to much fire, I found this pretty easy to do. But even when it could be considered easy I almost lost my Jaguar in one shot to the Nemesis. In all it was a fun game. One especially memorable moment was when Steven was stopped from entering the center building with his Valkyries as I had manned the walls, we decided that they could not enter through the roof. This won me the game I think as I then could find and get away with that objective.

Game 2 – Ground Control+

PHR Mark Dodridge, placed: 9th with 61 pts. at Ground Control+, win 14 – 6, KP 239/27 +212

For game 2 it was time for hide and seek, Hawk had changed the mission so it was possible to also contest a quarter, a good change. My opponent was Mark Dodridge who placed 9th with 61 points. I played Mark last Invasion in Bunker Assault, you can read about it here, Mark beat me that time and I hoped for revenge, which I got. Last time Mark played Shaltari, this time he had brought a PHR list with double Medusa. I had only faced double Medusa once before and did not really know what to expect.

It was a pretty eventless game as we both preferred to hide rather than fight. In turn 2 I was fortunate to destroy Mark’s two Phobos as he positioned them. I think this scared Mark a bit and think this made him overly cautious. The 2 Medusas never attacked, only hanged around in the back, out of sight. I was happy about this and tried to bait Mark’s infantry on the right side to jump into a building I already had shoot a bit at. It worked when I placed a squad of Braves as bait. Mark fortunately got out of the building before it collapsed, but it did not stop me to target his dropships and manage to kill of one squad of infantry while the other crashed and jumped out to seek cover in a nearby building. At this point Mark had only managed to kill one of my Yaris.

With some last turn shenanigans I secured three of the four quarters and contested the fourth with one Yari. I was able to do this as once again my opponent did not expect me to use my gates in a way he did not think was possible. A small rules discussion arose but was settled with the help of Hawk judges. Once the game was over we discussed the scenario a bit and both agreed that if you scored in both turn 3 and turn 6 Ground Control+ would be a more fun mission.

  1. Mike Burch says:

    Good read Jens, thanks
First game was Targets of Opportunity though. Game 5 was Military Complex

    • Jens Bäckman says:

Thanks Mike! You see, I can’t even remember the missions correctly. I will change it. 🙂

  2. J.D. Welch says:

Hi, Jens. Thanks for the AAR on your first two games of Invasion. Very revealing that you used the term “shenanigans” in both games’ write ups to describe how you won. 😉

I can’t recall where you placed and with how many Tournament Points. Can you please reply with that info? It will help when comparing you to your opponents (I like how you included their placement and TPs in you’re reviews!).

Also, thanks to the OB guys and their latest podcast, I now know how to properly pronounce your name! 😀

    Looking forward to Part 2…
